21st Century Learning
In Deer River, we have a history and reputation of using technology as a tool to improve how we teach, improve our students' ability to learn, and give our students access to opportunities and skills they will need in their future. As a district, our approach is to lead with quality instruction, based on a research-based instructional framework, and enhance that instruction with technology. To do this, our teachers work every day to answer the question: "How can I help this child learn what she needs to know and be able to do in a 21st century way?" 

Digital Transformation
In 2009, our District Technology Team revisited our district's approach to using technology and created
the following vision statement regarding technology:
"We believe that 21st century knowledge and the use of technology are imperative for the members of our district to become creative producers in an ever-changing world. To accomplish this, technology needs to be infused in all aspects of the educational process. Deer River Schools will combine 21st century curriculum, instruction, assessment, and resources with technology-enhanced environments to improve information and communication literacy, thinking and problem-solving skills, and technological aptitude."

As a result of this work, a district-wide commitment was made towards the full integration of technology as a result of a district-wide meeting held in March of 2012. Click here to see the presentation from that day.  As a result, Apple iPads were handed out to all teachers in March, 2012 and applications were solicited from grade level teams to participate in an iPad pilot for the fall of 2013, with the following aims:
  • Raise student achievement through individualized learning experiences
  • Increase engagement and excitement for learning
  • Equip students with collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills
  • Encourage students to communicate locally and globally
Four grade levels were selected to participate in the pilot during the 2012-13 school year: grades 1, 4, 8, and 10. Teachers were trained and iPads were deployed on two nights in August.

In 2013-14, grades 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 participated in phase 2 of the pilot. Teachers were trained and iPads were deployed in August.

For 2014-15, students in grades K-12 will all have iPads. Students in grades 6-12 will take devices home and students in grades K-5 will used the iPads in their classrooms. Students in the elementary may bring them home from time to time to work or to show their parents what they have been working on.
